About

I find the words for what is actually happening.

Allyn Bailey speaking on stage

That sounds simpler than the work usually is.

I have spent more than two decades working inside the places where technology, products, markets, organizations and human lives collide. Again and again, I have found that the visible problem is rarely the whole problem, and that people cannot respond deliberately to forces they have not been helped to see, understand or name.

Signal by Allyn is the company I built around that work.

My work is grounded in deep experience conducting applied ethnographic and action-based research inside business, market and organizational questions.

The work has changed names. The question underneath it has not.

What is actually happening here?

I began in early childhood development and learning, where behavior only made sense when you understood the person, environment, relationships and conditions surrounding it.

From there, my work moved through talent, hiring, experience design, HR technology, product, market narrative, executive communications and organizational change. Each field gave me a different view of the same recurring problem: official explanations often describe a system without adequately accounting for the people living inside it.

I learned to notice where the story and the experience diverge.

Where a quantity problem is actually a trust problem. Where communication is blamed for a change people have not been invited to understand. Where a complicated product has features but no shared meaning. Where a capable person loses the language for themselves because the evidence they once relied on has changed.

That thread eventually became the Signal Method, the advisory practice and the larger inquiry now taking shape through Identity Gravity.

Research practice

I study the problem where it is lived.

Across more than two decades of work, I have used ethnographic interviewing, observation, experience research, qualitative synthesis and action-based inquiry to investigate business, market and internal organizational questions.

The questions have varied. Why are people behaving differently than the strategy predicted? Why is a product or process not being experienced as intended? What is creating trust, resistance or disengagement? Where does the official account of a market, customer, employee or organization stop matching lived reality?

The research is not conducted for abstraction alone. It is designed to develop a more accurate account of what is happening, make that understanding usable and test what changes when people or organizations act on it.

That has meant listening closely to language and experience, examining environments and artifacts, following contradictions, comparing stated intentions with behavior and returning to the situation to see whether an interpretation still holds.

Identity Gravity extends that research practice into an independent inquiry about identity, AI, work and consequential change.

The subject is new. The discipline of investigating human and organizational reality is not.

This work is personal, but it is not only personal.

I did not arrive at identity as an abstract subject.

I know what it is for the story that explained a life to stop being sufficient before a new story is available.

Widowhood, parenthood, caregiving, work, aging and the long process of rebuilding have made identity, continuity, authorship and permission more than concepts to me. They have also made me deeply suspicious of advice that treats consequential change as a clean act of reinvention.

People do not begin again without history.

They carry roles, relationships, obligations, bodies, losses, accomplishments and other people’s recognition with them. The past does not disappear because a different future has become imaginable.

I became interested in what happens when those forces are understood rather than denied, and what meaningful movement remains possible before certainty arrives.

A way of seeing

I investigate before I interpret.

I begin with what was said, done, built, avoided, repeated or contradicted.

I treat the stated problem as evidence, not necessarily the diagnosis. I widen the frame to include the systems, relationships, identities, histories, incentives, technologies and material conditions shaping the situation.

Then I look for the explanation the current story cannot carry.

And then I find the words.

Not language that makes complexity disappear. Language that helps someone recognize the reality they are already living, share it with other people and make a more informed choice about what happens next.

Signal by Allyn

Understanding in service of agency.

Signal by Allyn is an independent research, publishing and advisory company focused on consequential change.

It exists to create understanding that expands the ability of people and organizations to participate deliberately in what happens next.

Identity Gravity is its first flagship research program. The inquiry examines how AI and other forces are changing the evidence through which people recognize competence, authorship, value, belonging, continuity and future possibility.

The research informs publications, speaking and experiences for people navigating change. The broader Signal Method informs advisory work with leaders and organizations facing misunderstood problems, difficult narratives and moments when the accepted explanation no longer accounts for reality.

Signal by Allyn is larger than one research project and larger than one chapter of my career. It is the permanent home for the work, methods and questions that emerge from this way of seeing.

Still inside the systems I study

The work is not being conducted from a safe distance.

I am Senior Director, Corporate Narrative & Executive Communications at SmartRecruiters, where I shape how the company and its executives communicate about AI, hiring, market change and the future of work.

That role keeps me close to the product, leadership, market and organizational realities that prevent this work from becoming commentary written entirely from the outside.

It also continues a career spent working where technology meets human consequence, where official strategy meets lived experience and where the quality of the language can determine whether people understand what they are being asked to participate in.

Signal by Allyn and Identity Gravity are independent of SmartRecruiters. Unless otherwise stated, the views and work published here are my own.

On the page, onstage and in the room

Serious thinking in human language.

I am a researcher who writes, a strategist who listens and a speaker who would rather stay with a difficult question than rush toward a polished answer.

The work moves between evidence, lived experience, humor, business reality, pattern and the sentence that finally allows something to be recognized.

I do not perform certainty the inquiry has not earned. I do not simplify people to make a framework work. I do not believe understanding requires pretending that every situation can be controlled or resolved cleanly.

My internal commitment to the work is simple:

I will look closely enough to tell you the truth, but I will not abandon you inside it.

Stay with the work.

Read the publications. Follow Identity Gravity as the research develops. Invite me into a room, a conversation or a situation that has become difficult to explain.
