Field Dispatch 01 · August 2026

Identity Gravityin Motion

I started this research trying to understand what happens when the identity we have built stops adequately explaining the life we are living.

More than 80 conversations and 493 independent survey respondents later, a first map of that field is beginning to emerge.

This is Field Dispatch 01. It is not a conclusion. It is a report from inside work that is still moving.

01 · The question

What happens when the life you built and the life you can now imagine begin pulling in different directions?

Identity Gravity began as an investigation into AI, work and identity. But the conversations kept moving somewhere deeper.

People were talking about responsibility, belonging, possibility, financial pressure, authority, curiosity, sacrifice and the strange moment when a future you could not previously see begins to feel imaginable.

AI was present. But increasingly, it did not look like the origin story. It looked more like an accelerant, mirror or permission structure inside something that was already underway.

04 · One provocation

AI is not the origin story.

The strongest pattern emerging from this work is not that AI suddenly caused people to question who they are. Many of those questions were already present.

What AI may be changing is the perceived distance between the life someone has and the life they can imagine. It can make exploration cheaper, possibilities more visible, questions easier to ask and, in some cases, movement easier to begin.

Read the first field dispatch.

Twenty pages from inside an ongoing investigation into identity, movement, possibility and the forces that give some versions of our lives more gravity than others.

06 · The longitudinal turn

The missing variable is time.

A snapshot can tell me what someone believes today. What it cannot show is how identity actually moves.

The next phase of Identity Gravity follows people over time through repeated pulses, field notes, moments of movement and follow-up conversations.

The goal is not surveillance. It is observation. I want to understand what changes, what does not, what gains mass, what loses it and what finally makes movement possible.

07 · Follow the work

The dispatch is one artifact. The field notes are where the thinking stays alive.

I write from inside the research as patterns emerge, assumptions break and new questions become impossible to ignore.

Identity is always in motion.

The question is not whether you are changing. The question is what currently has enough gravity to shape where you move next.
